Student Outreach

From the blog

The VCU School of Nursing also impacts the community through the involvement of several student organizations. The Student Nurses Association, the Women’s Health Nursing Group, and Nursing Students Without Borders at VCU all provide health education, screenings and other outreach to the local community. NSWB at VCU also provides global outreach through its annual trip abroad to remote places such as the Highlands villages of Guatemala.

Students, along with faculty, also volunteer for large-scale community outreach activities, such as the annual Remote Area Medical (RAM) clinic, the nation’s largest free medical outreach event, held in Wise, Virginia. The RAM clinic provides free medical care to more than 2,000 medically underserved individuals from Southwest Virginia, West Virginia and Tennessee. Students and faculty also volunteer each year at Mission of Mercy (M.O.M.) events held in various parts of the state. The Virginia Dental Association launched Mission of Mercy in 2000 to promote oral hygiene and provide free dental care to underserved populations. Our nursing students work with School of Pharmacy students to complete pre-procedure screenings, health education and triage services prior to patients receiving their dental work.
