TEACHING:

I teach and guest lecture in a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses.  My primary courses are NURS 365: Pathophysiology and Pharmacology I in the undergraduate program and NURS 722: Emerging Frameworks for Biobehavioral Clinical Research in the doctoral program.  I also serve a doctoral student advisor and as the nursing representative for the University Undergraduate Research Advisory Council (URAC).

RESEARCH:

The primary focus of my research is in exhaled breath biomarkers and their relationship with clinical outcomes, specifically in the mechanically ventilated, critically population and adults experiencing rib fractures.  I am currently the principal investigator of a VCU Center for Clinical and Translational Research (CCTR)-funded study focused on investigating the use of volumetric capnography to predict pulmonary outcomes in patients experiencing rib fractures.  I work with several interdisciplinary researchers, including the Center for the Study of Tobacco Products and Schools of Dentistry and Medicine.

SERVICE:

I am an active member of the Southern Nursing Research Society, American Thoracic Society; Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society where I serve as the Grants & Awards Chair of the local Gamma Omega Chapter, and the International Association for Breath Research.   I serve on the advisory boards for the VCU Johnson Center for Critical Care and Pulmonary Research and the Journal of Breath Research.  I also serve on the VCU School of Nursing PhD Curriculum Committee and University Graduate Council.
