TEACHING:

I am currently an Associate Professor at the School of Nursing teaching advance practice nurses about Health Informatics and working to integrate informatics into other programs at the School.    I completed my PhD in Instructional Technology at the Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia in 2006 with a research focus on User Satisfaction with Healthcare Information Systems,  a MS in the Management of Information Technology from the McIntire School of Commerce at UVa in 2001 and a BS in Computer Science from the State University of New York Institute of Technology. Prior to returning to graduate school, I worked as a computer systems engineer primarily in healthcare.  Since 2014 I have served as a committee member for the Health Information Systems Society (HIMSS) User Experience Committee where we work to raise awareness and promote improved user experiences with health information technology.

RESEARCH:

My research interests focus on the effective and efficient use of health information technology. In the past I have developed a simulated smart intravenous medication infusion pump on a netbook that will allow for more cost-effective training, use in simulation research and nursing education. I have also participated in grants to develop and implement an EMR in an inter-professional, inter-agency free clinic, develop curriclum materials for training of the Health IT workforce, and to integrate informatics content into the curriculum for psychiatric and mental health nurses.

SERVICE:

I am an active member of the Health Information Systems Society and currently serve as a committee member for their User Experience Community. Previously I served on the AlaSim International Annual Conference Committee as well as the University of Alabama Faculty Senate.
