Clinical Learning Center

From the blog

The Clinical Learning Center at the VCU School of Nursing is one of the most advanced and comprehensive clinical simulation centers on the East Coast. Recognized in 2010 as a Laerdal Center of Education Excellence, the center provides a wide array of resources and equipment for student, faculty and community advancement.

Nurses care for patients in complex environments and make thousands of critical decisions on a daily basis. Learning the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to provide high quality and safe care to patients is the main focus of our nursing programs.

Skills lab

Undergraduate students learn and practice technical skills such as physical assessment, IV insertion and medication administration in the center’s skills lab. As students progress through the program, additional skills that relate to the patient population they are studying and caring for in the clinical area are acquired in the Clinical Learning Center.

Graduate students learn advanced skills such as suturing, incision and drainage, and chest tube placement in the safety of the lab.

Simulations are a component of both the graduate and undergraduate clinical courses, and are carefully planned to address the specific learning needs and objectives in each course.

The Clinical Learning Center includes two intensive care simulation suites with control rooms behind one-way mirrors. High-fidelity patient simulators such as Laerdal’s Sim-Man, Sim-Baby or Sim-Mom live in these rooms and provide realistic patient experiences.

Both rooms are equipped with ceiling-mounted cameras and wireless microphones. Another high-tech simulator mannequin, Laerdal’s Sim-Baby New, is in a delivery room setting ready for a birth simulation.

Interdisciplinary work

We believe that nurses do not work in isolation; they work with many disciplines every day. That is why we have opportunities throughout the undergraduate program for our students to work with students from other disciplines such as medicine and pharmacy in the simulation environment.

A hallmark of our clinical educational experience is the collaboration and partnership with VCU Medical Center, a Joint Commission-accredited and Magnet-designated hospital where you’ll experience frequent, high-level enactment and the majority of your clinical experiences.

VCU Medical Center is also the principal clinical education site for medical, oral surgery, pharmacy and hospital administration students, which means you’ll observe patient safety goals and evidence-based practice from an interdisciplinary perspective.

Creating collaboration. Advancing science. Impacting lives.
