Research/Scholarship Interests

My biobehavioral program of research focuses on improving maternal and infant outcomes with a particular emphasis on maternal stress, associated stress responses, personal resilience and biologic pathways as well as epigenetic factors influencing outcomes in at-risk women.  A focus of my biobehavioral research is developing and testing innovative, easy to implement interventions to promote well-being, influence biobehavioral mechanisms, and improve health outcomes.  I have tested guided imagery, a complementary and alternative therapy, in different populations with positive results and continue to study the effects and mechanisms of this powerful therapy.

Teaching

I have extensive experience in perinatal and women’s healthcare and have practiced in a variety of settings, ranging from in-patient hospital settings, ambulatory care clinics, to case management in the United States and Europe. As a practicing clinical nurse specialist as well as family and women’s health nurse practitioner, I am familiar with the challenging stressors and symptoms experienced by families. I believe nursing has a tremendous role in delivering quality care and advancing the health and well-being of families. I teach primarily in the undergraduate and graduate masters-level programs. I also serve as a doctoral student advisor.
