Mobile Health and Wellness Program helps participants stay healthy and motivated

Since 2012, the Mobile Health and Wellness Program, led by the VCU School of Nursing, has been improving health outcomes for residents across Richmond and central Virginia. The program brings health checkups, chronic condition management, wellness coaching, and more to nine convenient locations.
For Curtis McClendon, the program has been instrumental in helping him stay on track with his health goals.
“Health-wise, I enjoy it and it just motivates me,” McClendon said. “It takes care of my health, and my health is better and better.”
The program’s innovative, team-based care model not only delivers essential health services but also connects participants with critical resources such as care coordination, social support, and assistance navigating systems like Medicaid and Medicare, brought straight to the communities people call home.
“You all go the extra mile to really help us,” McClendon said.
Through consistent participation and personalized support, McClendon has experienced measurable health improvements, including better control of his blood sugar and blood pressure, a clear sign of progress that led his doctor to extend the time between scheduled checkups.
“I have learned to love myself, to care about myself, to make sure that I'm staying on top of things,” he said. “And, I will continue to work on my health.”
At the heart of the program is a dual mission: to prepare future health leaders through immersive, community-based training, and to enhance the well-being of more than 2,000 Virginians by delivering accessible, person-centered care.
Curtis McClendon reflects on his journey with the Mobile Health and Wellness Program, highlighting how it has empowered him to take control of his health and stay motivated along the way.
