Research/Scholarship Interests

Nye's interests and expertise are in simulation, communication and developing positive learning and work environments. She has studied parent stress in the NICU, academic environmental needs of undergraduate nursing students, developing communication skills in undergraduate nursing students, and the use of simulation in graduate programs. She is the PI on a HRSA grant focused on improving wellness in health care providers through creating positive organizational change. Her national research team is working to validate the Nurse Practitioner Student Competency Assessment Tool (NPSCA) meeting the national need to have a tool that is mapped to the Essential Competencies, and can be used for simulation and clinical evaluation. She is also part of a team studying the use of an innovative dyad/POD model to deliver clinical education to graduate students.

Teaching

Nye teaches courses in the graduate program that incorporate the interrelated topics of health policy, leadership, professionalism, ethics, interprofessional and collaborative care, and quality improvement. She currently teaches in both the undergraduate and graduate health assessment courses, and in undergraduate community health. In her teaching role, she mentors both D.N.P. and Ph.D. students in their doctoral work.

Professional Service

Nye currently serves on the School of Nursing’s Appointment, Promotion and Tenure Committee. She is on the Advisory Council for the Virginia Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association Caring for Virginia's Caregivers Initiative. Nationally, she is a member of the Sigma Theta Tau, the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners and The International Association of Clinical Simulation & Learning. Through her work with the Simulation Committee with the National Organization of Nurse Practitioners Faculties, she has developed resources to support faculty deliver high quality simulations.
