Research/Scholarship Interests
Professor Julius Kimani's scholarship interests focus on advancing mental health awareness, improving access to evidence-based psychiatric care and reducing disparities among underserved and vulnerable populations. His work seeks to bridge the gap between mental health education and clinical practice by developing innovative strategies that promote early recognition, prevention and timely intervention for mental health conditions.
His research interests include integrating mental health education into healthcare and community settings, improving mental health literacy, evaluating innovative models of psychiatric service delivery (including telehealth) and strengthening the psychiatric workforce through education and faculty development. He is particularly interested in identifying barriers that limit access to quality mental health services in rural and underserved communities and developing sustainable, community-centered solutions.
Professor Kimani is also interested in interdisciplinary collaborations that translate research findings into practical interventions capable of improving patient outcomes, informing health policy and expanding equitable access to mental health care. His long-term scholarship aims to support resilient communities by advancing education, reducing stigma and promoting accessible, culturally responsive mental health services locally and globally.
Area of Current Clinical Practice
Professor Julius Kimani is a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) whose clinical practice focuses on the assessment, diagnosis and evidence-based management of mental health conditions across the lifespan. His areas of clinical interest include mood disorders, anxiety disorders, trauma-related conditions, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and serious mental illness, with an emphasis on comprehensive psychiatric evaluation, psychopharmacologic management and patient-centered care.
Drawing upon extensive experience in psychiatric-mental health, medical-surgical, critical care (ICU), post stroke rehabilitation and other complex medical conditions requiring interdisciplinary rehabilitation and long-term functional recovery, Professor Kimani values the integration of physical and behavioral healthcare to improve overall patient outcomes. His clinical philosophy emphasizes compassionate, culturally responsive care, patient education, collaborative decision-making, and the promotion of mental health literacy.
Professor Kimani is particularly committed to expanding access to high quality psychiatric services for rural and underserved communities through innovative models of care, including telepsychiatry and interdisciplinary collaboration. He is passionate about preparing the next generation of nurses and advanced practice providers by integrating current evidence, clinical expertise, and real-world application into nursing education while advancing equitable, accessible and person-centered mental healthcare.
