Research/Scholarship Interests
Tanner has focused mostly on educational interventions in his scholarship. Some examples include integrating a gross anatomy lab into undergraduate pathophysiology education, developing interprofessional simulations, integrating simulation into the curriculum to build clinical competence, implementing change in curricular design and interventions to enhance student clinical judgment.
Teaching
Tanner's clinical background is in adult critical care and his graduate work focused on nursing education. He focuses on blending clinical skills and reasoning with educational and learning theories that to help students be successful in the classroom as well as in their practice. He teaches primarily in the undergraduate program.

Professional Service
Tanner has been involved heavily in university and college/school service in his career. He has been involved in the curricular revision at the VCU School of Nursing based on the new essentials and has also served on the DEI committee, steering committee and as a faculty senator. He is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International.
