Research/Scholarship Interests

Deegan's scholarship interests include the implementation of competency validation models in inpatient nursing units, bridging the gap between education and practice for novice nurses using simulation as a teaching tool, using transformational leadership practices in the microsystem to create healthier work environments and supporting acute care nurses in a COVID-19 pandemic environment. Additionally, she is interested specifically in Heart Failure patients and enhancing quality of life post-discharge through targeted teaching tools.   

Teaching

Deegan teaches in the undergraduate curriculum with a focus on the clinical environment in adult health courses. Her primary focus is in the Clinical Learning Center to support best practices in simulation. Previously, she has coordinated and developed education for frontline staff in a variety of clinical settings (oncology, neurology, interventional cardiology, general surgery, and arrhythmia care units). In addition, she has experience in community and public health teaching infectious disease epidemiology and outbreak response management at a local and state level.

Professional Service

Deegan is an active member of the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) and the Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Society Beta Kappa Chapter at the University of Virginia.
