Inclusive Excellence and Belonging
August 13, 2024
During 2023-24, the VCU School of Nursing saw strides in its diversity and inclusion efforts. The associate dean for diversity, equity, and inclusion role was redefined and reimagined as the associate dean of inclusive excellence and belonging. The school's diversity, equity and inclusion council was integrated with its counterpart in the VCU College of Health Professions (CHP) and relaunched as the Inclusive Excellence Council, with the council adopting a co-chair model with equal representation and leadership from both the School of Nursing and CHP.
Throughout the year, the Inclusive Excellence Council organized impactful educational events that engaged students, faculty and staff. Highlights included a talk on healthcare for trans individuals, GreenZone Training for Military and Veteran Student Inclusion, and a Black History Month lecture by Katie Boston-Leary, Ph.D. titled "Truth, Reckoning, and Reconciliation: Nursing’s Past, Present, and Future." Additionally, a lecture for Neurodiversity Month and Macy Foundation Grant Training on Antiracism were held, furthering the school’s commitment to fostering an inclusive and equitable environment.
