Chief Purpose of the Position

The associate dean provides visionary leadership for the undergraduate nursing portfolio. This role integrates administrative oversight with academic excellence, ensuring that our curriculum remains at the forefront of clinical practice and health equity.

Key Responsibilities

Executive functions across academic leadership and departmental management

Academic Leadership

Oversee curriculum development, assessment and accreditation for all undergraduate nursing programs, ensuring alignment with national standards and board requirements.

Faculty Development

Direct the Department of Family and Community Health Nursing, mentoring faculty through the promotion and tenure process while fostering a culture of research.

Strategic Planning

Collaborate with the dean's leadership team to implement the school's strategic plan, focusing on student success and community partnerships.

Community and Equity

Lead initiatives that promote health equity and community engagement, integrating social determinants of health into the nursing curriculum.

Clinical Partnerships

Manage and expand clinical placement opportunities for students across the VCU Health system and community partners.

Qualifications and Requirements

Required

  • Earned doctorate in nursing or a related field; if doctorate is not in nursing, must have a master’s in nursing
  • Eligibility for licensure as a registered nurse in Virginia
  • Record of excellence in teaching, scholarship and service consistent with appointment at the rank of associate professor or professor

Preferred

  • Experience in academic leadership (e.g., program director, department chair, assistant dean)
  • Demonstrated success in securing external funding for research or educational initiatives
  • National recognition in a nursing specialty area
