Chief Purpose of the Position
This senior tenure-track faculty position is a strategic priority and will lead a high-impact research program in mental health and/or brain health to
- bridge the school’s existing strengths in maternal/perinatal health and aging/dementia
- amplify the impact of VCU’s existing interdisciplinary research in the field
- serve as a catalyst for interdisciplinary collaboration, leveraging VCU’s status as a top-tier public research university to advance health equity, improve health outcomes and optimize health care delivery for vulnerable populations

Key Responsibilities
Research leadership, interdisciplinary collaboration and mentorship across mental health and brain health science
Research and Scholarship
Lead a High-Impact Research Program
Maintain a robust, externally funded research portfolio focused on mental health, neuroscience, brain health and/or cognitive aging.
Grant Leadership
Drive Extramural Funding
Secure consistent extramural support, including R-level, center and training grants, to advance innovative research and strengthen VCU’s research capacity.
Scientific Dissemination
Advance and Share Discovery
Publish in high-impact peer-reviewed journals and present findings at national and international scientific, policy and professional forums.
Interdisciplinary Collaboration
Partner with colleagues across VCU and beyond to address complex systems-level challenges in mental health, brain health and health care delivery.
Mentoring and Impact
Teach and mentor students, trainees, junior faculty and colleagues while helping translate research into practice, policy and community benefit.
Qualifications and Requirements
Required
- Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in nursing, neuroscience, psychology, public health, medicine or a related field
- Eligibility for appointment at the rank of associate or full professor in a tenure-eligible role
- Distinguished record of scholarly publication and consistent recent extramural funding as principal investigator
Preferred
- Eligibility for RN licensure in Virginia and at least two years of previous clinical experience, if a registered nurse
- Experience mentoring doctoral students, junior faculty and/or postdoctoral trainees
- Experience with biobehavioral measurement, implementation science or interdisciplinary collaboration in mental health and brain health
